Dan Grayson, age 85, of Comanche, Texas passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014. He was born March 26, 1929 in Gustine, Texas to C.A. “Doc” and Myrtle (Snodgrass) Grayson. Dan attended school in Gustine, before moving to Comanche. On October 14, 1950, he was united in marriage to Elsmer Louise “Poopie” Grayson in Comanche. For fourteen years, Dan served his country as a Sergeant E-6 in the 36th Infantry Division U.S. National Guard, and had his Private Pilots License. In the early years, he had two service stations, Friendly Service Station, and later, Walter & Dan’s. He later began his truck driving career driving for Harry Cloud, then James Transport in Comanche. In 2001, Dan was named one of the top ten truck drivers in the United States, and was recognized for his outstanding service to James Transport, and appointed to NASTC Team 2002 America’s Best Drivers, and awarded Driver of the Year Award in Nashville, TN. Dan was also recognized by Bill Mack of WBAP Radio on the Midnight Cowboy Trucking Show for driving over a million miles, Accident Free. He drove over three million miles accident-free during his profession, and never had an accident in all his truck driving years. His friends, and fellow drivers affectionately called him “Dangerous Dan”, and referred to him as “Dan The Man”. He retired in 2006 after 45 years of trucking. He was proud of having his Concealed Handgun License. Dan was a member of Comanche Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was a Baptist. Dan loved life, he loved fishing and his family. He was known as a very caring and sincere man. He never got in a hurry, and always had time to sit and visit, or sit in the floor and play with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Elsmer Louise “Poopie” Grayson of Comanche; son, Steven Grayson and wife Donna of Comanche; three grandchildren: Corbin Grayson and wife Sarah of Sanger, Faith Grayson of Comanche, and Ashlyn Grayson of Comanche; two great-grandchildren: Lila Grayson of Sanger and Job Grayson of Sanger; sister, Pat Huffman of Stephenville; sister-in-law, Jean Grayson of Arkansas; sister-in-law Gwen Woolsey and husband Ernest of Comanche; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, C.A. “Doc” and Myrtle Grayson; and brother, Kenneth Grayson.
