FUNERAL SERVICES: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Comanche High School Gym. VISITATION: 5:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. Friday, February 27, 2015, at Comanche Funeral Home. INTERMENT: Siloam Cemetery in Comanche County. LUNCH: Lunch for the family will be at Comanche Middle School Cafeteria from 11:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Saturday. Gene Westmoreland, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, in Temple, Texas. He was born on November 23, 1943, in Dublin, Texas, to Howard D. Westmoreland, Sr. and Sybil (Wilson) Westmoreland. He was baptized at the Pearl Street Church of Christ in Comanche. Gene was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. On November 16, 1962, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Susan Joyce Lindsey, in Lamesa, Texas. Gene attended Texas A & M University (1962 – January of 1967), on a full Track Scholarship. In 1969 Gene and Susan moved to Comanche, where Gene was employed by Comanche ISD as a teacher/coach. He served Comanche ISD for forty-four years. He was beloved by his athletes and students, who, to this day, still call and think of him as “Coach Westmoreland.” Gene touched many students’ lives in many ways, whether through picking them up on the school bus on early school mornings, teaching them drivers’ education during the summertime, or through athletics during the school year. He was a passionate man who had a love of competition and set high expectations for all of his athletes. His amazing legacy will live on! He received many accolades for his accomplishments on the court, but his greatest accomplishment was his family. His love for Susan was obvious and unconditional, and when it came to his three daughters and five grandkids, that was when his true passion came out. Whether it was cheering them on at a basketball game, playing the guitar at a fiddling contest, or driving the Polaris to the sand pile before eating an ice cream cone, Gene loved his family above all else. We often told him that he held the record for “Pa Pa of the Year.” He will truly be missed. We Love You!
