James Harvey “Pop” Hickman, age 86, passed away surrounded by family on July 22, 2024, in Comanche, Texas.
Pop was born on February 17, 1938, to Charles Frank Hickman and Mable Gunnels in Rayville, LA. The family lived in Rayville for 3 years before moving to Magnolia, AR. In his younger years he loved to squirrel hunt and fish with his best friend Raymond Kimbell, even when they would get lost in the woods. He also loved helping his uncle farm peas and watermelons in the summers. On July 14, 1956, Pop came to Texas to visit cousins and that is where he met his future wife, Carolyn Sue Hampton, at the Sun Oil Camp where they would later get married on October 26, 1956. After moving to Texas, he worked as a driller in the oilfield. Pop was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and worshipped the Lord. Pop loved mowing and working in the yard. Pop was a huge fan of Blue Bell Ice Cream and the Dallas Cowboys, but most of all, he was a man who loved the Lord, his wife, children, grandbabies, great-grandbabies, and friends.
Pop is survived by his wife, Sue Hickman; daughter, Amanda & husband, Harold Higginbotham; son, Mike & wife, Benae Hickman; granddaughter, Jaime & husband, Sean Aleman; grandson, Trevor Higginbotham; granddaughter, Sarah Benson; great-grandsons, Carter Lee & Scottie James; and on the way great-granddaughter, Lainey Rose; sisters, Sue Kimbell, Ruth Hunt & Diane Isaacs; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
