Johnny Poynor

March 30, 1936 — May 14, 2024

John Allen Poynor, age 88, entered his eternal home in heaven on May 14, 2024. He was born March 30, 1936, in a Continental Oil Camp to Carnis and Virginia Poynor.

He was united in marriage to Zulean Fisher on June 30, 1956, at Sweetwater Baptist Church, Comanche. They moved to Ozona, Texas and started their family. In 1961, he then moved his family to Big Lake, Texas where he went into business with his father at C.H. Poynor Construction Co. He was ordained as a deacon at Bethel Baptist Church in Big Lake. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, enjoyed golfing when he had the time, and he and his family made some lifelong friends in Big Lake.

In 1977, John and his wife were blessed to be able to buy the old Poynor home place, build a home, and move back to Comanche, a dream they had had since they were engaged. Johnny enjoyed raising and showing cutting horses and enjoyed having cattle. He was also pretty good at whittling, which was a relaxing hobby for him. He joined First Baptist Church of Comanche where he served as Deacon, was a member of Pairs and Spares Sunday School class, served on the Building and Grounds committee, among others, helped with Comanche County Rehab, and really cherished Wednesday morning prayer breakfast with other men, young and old. In 2017, he was proudly honored as a Life Service Deacon. John loved his church family and was always happy to share the love of Jesus at every opportunity.

He was a wonderful husband and father. He loved being PawPaw (aka Paw) to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed taking them horseback riding, fishing, and following all of them in their sports.

He is survived by his wife, Zulean, who he had been married just shy of 68 years; son, Britt Poynor and wife, Marla, of Big Lake; daughter, Penny Whitten and husband, Sam, of Comanche; three grandsons, Clay Butler (Joy), Shawn Poynor (Anita), Casey Poynor (Krystle); two granddaughters, Megan Herbert (West), Courtney Robles (Rocky); 14 great-grandchildren, Kye (Lauren), Taven, Paris, David, Dylan, Kylie, Rhett, Avery, Britton, Ryen, Brynn, Allie, and Evelyn; sister-in-law, Janette Poynor; brother-in-law, Dale Fisher and wife, Vicky; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carnis and Virginia Poynor; son, Jesse Allen Poynor; and brother, Robert (Bob) N. Poynor.
