Mary Estelle (Barlett) Spruill, 86, of Comanche passed away Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Legacy Estates in Comanche. She was born August 15, 1938, at home in Sidney, Texas to Blake Bartlett and Cleo McNutt Bartlett. Her family moved to Hasse where she attended first through eight grade at Hasse School, then attended Comanche High School where she graduated with her sister Jane in 1956.
Never wanting to be thought of as a lazy woman, Mary started her first job at Owl Drug and Bus Station on the square in Comanche at the age of 14. After high school, she worked in Dallas for three years before returning to Comanche where she continued to work in various jobs, including the Cookie Shop, the sewing room at Comanche Manufacturing, Wrights Leather Goods, and cooking at the Comanche Elementary School Cafeteria.
On December 14, 1963, she married John Mark Spruill. Two years later they welcomed a daughter, Donna Ruth Spruill. Mary loved spending time with her family, extended family, and later her grandchildren. She was known for hosting meals and family get togethers, having up to 30 people in the little family farmhouse. She sewed and often made her and Donna’s clothes. She dearly loved her five grandchildren and just this past May was promoted to great grandma with the arrival of her great grandson.
Mary and John Mark were members of Eastside Baptist Church until their deaths. She was a four-time cancer survivor and participated in the Relay for Life for several years. Mary loved all her friends and was reunited with many when she moved into Legacy Estates earlier in the summer. A special thank you to all the Legacy and Alpha Omega Hospice staff who made here last days easier fighting a lengthy illness. Legacy’s Christian care philosophy shown through brightly.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband John Mark in March 2022, her sister, Jane Welch and brother, Donald Bartlett.
She is survived by her daughter Donna Green and husband Cory of Pflugerville, Texas. Five grandchildren, Jessica Green (fiancé Devyn Sieck) of Georgetown, Texas, Shelby Green Stires (husband Michael) of Bryan, Texas, Hayden Green (wife Megan) of Georgetown, Texas, Dathan Green of Leander, Texas, and Seth Green of Stephenville, Texas; and one great grandson Micah Force Stires. She is also survived by several loving nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.
