GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Sardis Cemetery in Comanche County. VISITATION: Family will receive friends at Comanche Funeral Home on Saturday morning from 10:30 A.M. until 12:00 Noon on Saturday. CONDOLENCES may be sent to Glynith McSmith, Granite Mesa Health Center, 1401 Max Copeland Drive, Marble Falls, Texas 78654. Newman Francis McSmith, a true Texan at heart and resident of the Lone Star State for more than half of his life, died on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in Marble Falls, Texas at the age of 89 years. One of seven siblings, Mr. McSmith was born on February 6, 1922, in the community of Donie, Texas, to Hugh and Zeloa McSmith. He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II as a Ship’s Cook – Second Class – where he saw action in the South Pacific. So anxious to serve his country he saw fit to “fudge” his birth date by a year in order to meet the age requirements for enlistment. Following the war, along with his first wife, Sarah, Newman settled in Los Angeles, California to raise their only son. After Sarah’s untimely death, Newman returned home to Texas where he would eventually meet and marry his current wife, Glynith of Austin, Texas. Newman and Glynith lived in Austin, Valley Spring, Comanche, Gatesville, Temple, Burnet and Marble Falls. If asked for one achievement that he would hold most highly above all others, it would surely be his selection as a deacon of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Comanche. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Glynith McSmith; son, Gaylon McSmith; brother, William Delbert McSmith; sister, Juanita Johnson; stepchildren, Jerry Fergurson, Jimmy Fergurson, and Linda Freitag; and grandchildren, Shannon Moore and Sean McSmith. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 29 years, Sarah McSmith.
