Walter Eugene Bates was born October 6, 1954, to Jesse and Zola Mae Bates in Brady, Texas.
On August 20, 1977, Eugene married the love of his life, Pam Ross. They were blessed with two sons.
Eugene loved all sports and coached his sons' football, soccer, baseball and basketball teams. He dearly loved every kid he was privileged to coach. After his sons graduated high school, Eugene took on a second job as a referee and umpire. His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren participate in various sports and video taping every single game.
Serving as a long-time deacon at First Baptist Church in Comanche was an honor to Eugene. He was a man of deep abiding faith in Christ. The ultimate family man, his wife, children and grandchildren were the absolute joy of his life.
Preceding Eugene in death were his parents and brother, James Bates.
Survivors include his wife, Pam; sons, Justin and wife, Amber, of DeLeon and Jarrett and wife, Alyssa, of Fort Worth; six grandchildren, Kinsey, Cason, Caroline, Camden, Cole and Cooper; one sister, Rita McClain of Dilley, Texas; and one brother, Edward Bates.
