William C. "Cliff" Conway

December 23, 1954 — April 29, 2023

William Clifford ‘Cliff’ Conway, age 68, passed away at his shop on Saturday, 29 April 2023.

Cliff was born on December 23, 1954 in Gorman, TX to parents Jerry and Lavada Conway. He graduated from Comanche High School in 1973 and began college at Tarleton State University in the fall of that year. He attended Tarleton from 1973-1975 and then transferred to Texas A&M and graduated a proud Aggie in 1977 with a degree in Mechanized Agriculture.

After graduating college, he returned to Comanche where he became a welder in the peanut fields; doing field repairs to farm equipment all across the area. Along the way he began to pick up the windmilling trade from his cousin Dee Wilson and has since become known as the “windmill man” in Comanche and Comanche County.

He has spent most of his life in service to others on numerous boards and clubs throughout the county including the Comanche County Historical Museum as 2nd Vice President, Comanche County Historical Commission, Comanche County Christmas organization, Comanche County Antique Tractor Club, is extremely involved in the ministry at his church Eastside Baptist Church here in Comanche, and is a Ham Radio Operator and a weather spotter. But most importantly, when something needed to be done, something needed to be fixed, or something needed to be figured out…it was him and his pickup that always seemed to show up just at the right time, with just the right tools and equipment to fix it just the right way. He was grateful but extremely humbled to be nominated and selected as the Comanche Chamber of Commerce ‘Citizen of the Year’ awardee for 2022. Always smiling and quick to stop and share a quick story or word of advice, he constantly looked for ways to make others’ lives a little easier wherever he could. The term ‘big shoes to fill’ doesn’t apply to him due to the impossibility of the task.

Cliff was a loving and proud son, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to anyone who happened to have the privilege of meeting him. No one remained a stranger for long as he was happy to spend as long as you had to talk and share how proud he was of his family and friends.

Cliff leaves behind a son, Logan Conway and wife, Tricia; and son Nolan Conway; 6 grandchildren Shandelle, Payton, Kaelyn, Adalyn, Arlee, and Manning Conway and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Lavada Flanagan Conway; and his brother and lifelong best friend Gail Conway.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made either to the Comanche County Historical Museum or to Eastside Baptist Church.
